With the message “Uncover the researcher gene within you!”, everyone is invited to spark their curiosity, explore the world of science, hear personal stories, and take part in creative activities. It is a chance to meet scientists, step inside laboratories, and understand how each of us can be part of the story of science.
The Latvian Quantum Initiative invites you to visit the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, and the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, to discover the work of scientists!
University of Latvia
House of Nature (Jelgavas iela 1) and House of Science (Jelgavas iela 3)
Exciting experiments, technology demonstrations, workshops, conversations with scientists, games, and quizzes – all this awaits at the European Researchers’ Night! From 17:00 to 22:00, the University of Latvia invites everyone to the Academic Centre to unleash their inner researcher by joining activities throughout the evening.
Learn more about quantum technologies through the following activities:
Quantum algorithm demonstrations
House of Science, 4th floor, Room 401
• Watch visualizations of how a quantum computer works
• 19:00 – Lecture by Professor Andris Ambainis on quantum computers as the future of computing technology and their potential
Optical magnetic field quantum sensors: applications in navigation and communication
House of Science, 5th floor, Room 532
• Learn about alternative navigation options using magnetic field sensors
• Discover how information can be transmitted not only with electric fields but also with magnetic fields
Riga Technical University
From 17:00 to 22:00 on September 26, RTU will open its doors for everyone – from children to adults – to explore engineering, science, and innovation. Visitors will find activities in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, electronics, computing, water research, civil engineering, maritime studies, racing formulas, energy efficiency, smart homes, biomaterials, and real-life chemical processes.
One highlight will be the Optical Fiber Transmission Systems Laboratory (Āzenes iela 12, Rīga, 2nd floor, Room 233) – unique in the Baltics – where you can learn about optical fibers, sensors, modern optical technologies for data transmission, and technologies for the secure communication networks of the future.
Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia
Ķengaraga iela 8, Rīga
On September 26, from 17:00 to 21:00, visitors are invited to take part in exciting experiments and activities at the Institute of Solid State Physics.
Families with children, school pupils, students, and all interested guests will enjoy a spectacular fire show, test their skills in an escape room and a laser maze, view their own hair under a microscope, try microfluidics chips and touch-sensitive sensors, and join experiments with light and temperature.
Educational lectures and discussions will also take place:
- Fire shows in the courtyard at 17:30, 19:00, 20:30
- In the 2nd floor hall:
• 18:00 – Presentation “The Nano World”
• 18:20 – Discussion on BioPhoT projects and future innovations
• 19:30 – Presentation “Light and Light Technologies”
• 19:50 – Scientists’ stories of “mishaps” and experiences
Everyone is welcome to join the Researchers’ Night and discover the role of science in everyday life!
