On Tuesday, December 5th, during the annual European Innovation Area Summit of the European Parliament, a discussion titled "Global Quantum Internet - Made in Europe" took place.

In the discussion, scientists, representatives from companies, and decision-makers explored the further development of quantum communication technologies in Europe. The discussion was organized by the "Quantum Internet Alliance" consortium, which brings together 42 European scientific institutions and companies in collaboration with the European Parliament. The event was led by European Parliament member Ivars Ījabs.

During the event, "Quantum Internet Alliance” provided the information of the planned pilot quantum communication network which will connect three countries. For the first time, the pilot network will include quantum repeaters - devices that enable the connection of multiple quantum communication segments, thereby extending the distance over which quantum information is transmitted.

Professor Andris Ambainis spoke about potential future applications of quantum communication and emphasized the need to involve all European Union countries in the development of quantum technologies. Representatives from companies discussed the prerequisites for the commercialization of quantum communication networks.
